Hey wait a minute. Im German and proud of it, and i would never ever wear socks with sandals. That's just weird. In fact i have tan lines on my feet from my flip flops. So there not all people that are German do the same things as the others.

In Germany there are things called toe termites. They are rampant in most areas and breed very quickly feeding on the sweat from German men's feet. If they feed from your feet at any time it causes severe swelling and blisters which last for several days. A German man in the late 1600's found that this was easily remedied by wearing socks and making sure that you were always the first on a sun lounger so as to keep your feet away from the ground. The Germans do this at all times through fear...do not mock their curse!

Germans are great engineers but have no sense of style. The people who design their great looking cars are British or American. German men also have no shame and will wear the tiniest denim shorts in public, will sport a mullet and think David Hassellhoff is way cool.
As for being down on wearing white socks with trainers, that is how you are supposed to wear trainers (sneakers) otherwise the sweat from your feet gets into the shoes and makes them stink

Simply because they have more sense than the rest of us...though not dress sense. I wore my sandals at the weekend without socks and I sorely wished I had worn them after traipsing around the shops for two hours. Very sore blistered feet.
Edit: I can guarantee that if Brad Pitt wore socks with his sandals most males would follow his example.

Lots of Englishmen also wear socks with sandals, whereas my German son in law doesn't wear socks with sandals but then as he has a Punk Band I don't think I would expect him to.

It is not restricted to German's. Have you ever traveled outside the country in which you live? I would guess not because there are all kinds of different, what you would call fashion "errors" in the world.

English men do it too, they were trainers with white socks on holiday, socks with sandals and shirts with shorts too, very big fashion errors are made by our guys too..
