They are ment to be coverin ur ears, firstly to move u through the water faster, secondly so the chance of gettin swimmers ear is low. Like someone else said, the chances of u not hearin are slim, but if u really cant then just whenever ur coach is talkin or explainin somethin, put them above ur ears to hear, and put them back when ur ready 2 swim. I hope i helped!

Competitive swimmers cover them so that the ears are not sticking out. Ears that stick out might prevent them from swimming faster. I'm not kidding - they shave off the body hair, too, for that reason.

I always cover my ears. You can still hear everything, the sound is only slightly distorted. Try it.

But the problem is, my swimming cap climbs up and un-covers my ears.

You don't cover your ears with the swim cap. Your ears are open to the water. The cap is just useful to keep your hair in. The cap goes just above your eyes.

You wear the Cap over your ears and you will still hear everything. I Swam for 14 years and i never had a problem hearing the starting gun.

It should be covering your ears. If you are in the water not being able to hear shouldn't be a problem.
