Windows is what we call an Operating System. It is software (i.e. lines of code and instructions) that helps run your computer.
You, the user, communicate with the hardware (i.e. the CPU ("brain"), the printer, scanner....) and other software (games, applications such as Internet Explorer, msn messenger...) .
The computer can NOT run without an operating system. Windows is by far the most used operating system. Its exact details are a Microsoft secret and is the reason Bill Gates has $50,000,000,000!

Wanderer, you are either very computer illiterate, or real stupid. I would like to think you have never been around computers. Windows is an operating system that is part of a computer's software. The computer is the big box with all the cords, wires, etc, and connected to a TV type screen.
Do you need it any simpler?

Windows its not type of computer it is a sofware that make your applications run. It is called operating system (OS). Each OS has it pupose to make program running. Dos is early type of OS. While program on the other hand is piece of sofware that run on the OS. Theres lots of OS out there and one of them is Windows. Its popular cos lots of task it can carry such multimedia content, graphic, and so on.
There also Mac, Linux, Ubuntu, Lindows and others.
If got basic work to do such typing and surfing you can used Ubuntu OS (Linux base OS)and you can download it for free. You can run OpenOffice another open source project program for alternative to Windows Ofiice by Microsoft and it also free.

but windows is an operating system it waz created by the microsoft corporation so "windows" is the name of the operating software.

I deduce you are using Mac? Windows on a PC is like a Mac OS on a Mac. The software itself that's used for running the computer.
Unless you talk about "a window"... That's just a generic term about a visually separated (usually rectangular) area on a screen.
