micheal essien lacks the experience of makelele. makelele is the better of the two, but i can see essien filling makelele's role in the long term.
ballack will add an extra cutting edge in the centre of midfield for chelsea.

I'm sorry, but Essien isn't a bit like Makelele. In fact, there isn't another player around who can play the Makelele role. Essien won't and will never play the so called holding role. He will be part of a central two in a more traditional 4 man midfield, although I can see him operating on the right from time to time. But in general this season Chelsea will select two from Essien, Lampard and Ballack. If Mourinho wants to go with his 3 man midfield, then the most likely replacement for Makelele will be Lasanna Diarra.

Makelele is currently better but he is getting older, and will be replaced by Diarra/Mikel, as for Ballack he along with Lampard and Essien will be a great additoin to the midfield.
As for saying Chelsea will not profit from having Ballack they got him for free, and he is one of the best in the world.

Micheal Essien reminds me of a young but inexperienced Makelele. He's definately in the mould of Makelelel too but he's gotta mature and stop giving away pointless fouls like by pulling Corradi's hair during the Chelsea vs City match.

Makelele is twice the player Essien is.Ballack needs to adjust to life in the premier league just like all foreigners coming here, but given a few matches,we should see what he's capable of

He certainly a better passer, but a poorer tackler. But makalele is on the decline now, I've seen Chelsea's midfield over committed in attack and was exposed on the counter, numerous of times. Ballack will give Chelsea depth, and more headache for mourinho in team selection.

Essien is good, agree! And Makelele? He's only complaining about his poor fate all the time, I can't even remember his strong sides now. And what about Ballack...sorry, no profit from him; my friend (a Bayern Münich fan) has cast a curse on him;-)

Essien is a cracking good player it is just a pity that the Special One cannot see this and use him properly, I would have him in my team over any other Chelsea player. Ballack and Terry(goes down like a blouse every time he is tackled) will give you the edge over other teams in cheating your way through a match.

Essien is a thug who is liable to do something stupid at any time!
Ballack is very secure and holds the ball up well and rarely does anything stupid.
