Go to Fisherman's Warf and Pier 39. There are many old great restaurants there including Aliotos and Grotto #9. Scomas (sp?) is tucked away in a corner and is very good. I enjoyed a visit to Alcatraz but you can also tour the bay by boat. Chinatown (find a small Chinese place to eat, not a tourist place) is nice as is Golden Gate Park which has many museums. Visit Cliff House and the great view. There is a restaurant there as well. The view from Coit Tower is great and the crooked street Lombard St. is nearby. I have not been to Market St. in years but in its day that was where a lot of shopping was. There used to be a 49 mile drive that was a tour of the city. There was a Russian restaurant on Geery St. I visited years ago. Also Tommys joint was great. The War Memorial Opera House is where the UN began and it may have a play or concert on. Have a great trip. I hope you have at least a week. Traffic is terrible and parking is expensive. The cable cars are great but these days are crowded.

San Francisco is a great place with The Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, and more
San Francisco's #1 seafood restaurant is tadich Grill on California Street. The Wharf is a tourist trap with lots to see, and overpriced food. Its ok, but not like the Tadich Grill (also open for lunch, but no reservations are accepted;go early)
Plan on a day trip to Napa Valley; its a one hour drive and an incredible place to visit

Depends on your taste, but there is something for everyone. From the Museum of Modern Art to the Haight (which isn't the hippie "mecca" it once was, but is a unique neighborhood). Some restaurants I like are A La Tuca (Turkish-869 Geary St), Hahn's Hibachi (Korean 3 locations including 1305 Castro St), Naan n Curry (Pakistani, 3 locations including 533 Jackson St near chinatown) and Steps of Rome (fun Italian cash only cafe in North Beach: 348 Columbus Ave). Some interesting neighborhoods: Mission (a little rough, latin), Castro (gay), Haight (still a little counterculture I guess, shops and restaurants), Hayes Valley (shops & restaurants), Powell street (shops, cable car, union square, SF Center mall), Chinatown, North Beach (Italian neighborhood). To find things to do buy a SUnday Chronicle and read the pink section, or get local entertainment magazines like SF weekly. Hope this helps.

Fisherman's wharf is one of the biggest must-see places in my opinion. Grab a cup of the best clam chowder at Bubba Gum's Restaurant. It's famous.
See Lombard St. (Crookedest St. in the world!)
Go through china town.
Alcatraz if you want..it's not that great to me.
Haight Ashbury for the "hippy" scene.
Union Square has regular shopping.
Walk the piers.
And to get around, take the trolley! It's only $3

I go there every weekend. It's awesome. One of the best places to visit.
Alcatraz, Pier 39, Cliffhouse and the beach next to it, Forever 21 (it's huge!) lol, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge.
