I'm up for revolution, where do I sign?

A better world yes. An order no. Orders usually leave some outside in the cold and suggest rules for things that are fluid.

If you're searching for perfection, not a chance.

Perhaps what we really need is an outsider to pull the world together. Much like having the communists or extremists have helped the west. Canetti said something about one crowd needing an opposite to keep itself together so bring on the alien invaders.

In the past the people with power to change the world have always failed. The world cannot be changed by armies, only by ideas. But just as armies have failed so do ideas. The BIG ideas become bogged down with dogmatism and fanaticism, and in the end achieve the very reverse of a better world. Religious creeds are startling examples of how BIG ideas become derailed.
All of which inevitably leads to President Bush. A man with the power. A born-again christian. He tries to use armies just to change the middle east. He pig-headedly sticks to his belief that a new order can be acheived. He has committed his policies to this belief, in the face of all the bloody reality which the whole world is able to see and to which he is blind. And what happened to the ideals of a born-again christian? One must suspect that he envisages himself as some sort of crusader, motivated by the desire to drive out infidels from the holy land. Rather than a new world order it seems to me he would rather have Armagedon.

No. a better world can never be achieved. If mankind is imperfect so must world order also be.

it would be brilliant to be able to believe that this could happen in our lifetime. but I am cynical of that. purely because I talk about this issue a lot with my friends who feel strongly that the government and politics that we currently live in and have to survive are moving further and further away from what we believe in.

anyone that has a kind and loving soul will always feel hurt and impotent at the sight of the news on TV that seems to be rife with violence, poverty, rage, prejudice and aggression.

it seems that the sort of people who reach those heights of power where they get a say in what can be changed and what cannot be, are the very types of people who do not ask these kinds of questions. They would do well to log onto Answers to get in touch with what some of the people are feeling....to tap into our despondency when it comes to voting and why we are like that (because, given the choices of who we could be voting for, there seems to be a lack of values that someone like me can relate to or even give my support to, let alone something that I truly believe in), why we feel so helpless as individuals to make a difference, the helpless feeling that we are a small and alone bunch who get the piss taken out of us for being idealistic hippies and that the "critical mass" that we need to reach is nowhere in sight.

aside from all this doom and gloom however, maybe it is possible. maybe we should start a movement here and now and get in touch with as many people with the same beliefs as possible and see what can happen. What is possible......I don't know. We can only hope and carry on being true to ourselves. I believe the wisdom in what John (Thurbe) said in his answer to this question. It has to start with ourselves. If we live in a way that we believe to be right and try to start a trend amongst our friends and closest circles, it is a start albeit on a small scale. Maybe it is enough to get that rippling effect and will reach that oh so important critical mass.

I will live on in that hope and hope to meet more people who are striving to make this world a better place. A Place where everyone is helping everyone else, where anyone, no matter what colour, religion or background has a right to exist without prejudice, where violence has no place and where hope will set us free.

Sounds impossible, but then hoping is all about dreaming, and from our dreams, with a lot of courage, can come reality.

It is not only possible, as it is also inevitable, with just one small exception. If mankind will not annihilate itself, which is relatively easy, it will continue it's evolution toward higher being. Call it as you want - the Age of Aquarius, the Awakening - name is not important. Open your eyes, see through the veil and mist, and you will see. You will see human potential, the endless possibilities. If that sounds unbelievable, look backwards, into human kind history. Two hundred thousands years ago, there was nothing more on Earth than a race of beings, that wasn't able to communicate with each other using more advanced techniques than a grunts, jumping and gesticulating. Quite often, the most effective way of communicating was hitting the... interlocutor with something heavy. There was no culture, no thoughts - other than simple instincts like: eat, fight, run, procreate. And now, after two hundred thousands years - it is not so long as it could seem - we are most intelligent, cultured, and promising species that ever lived on Earth, in Solar system, and - who knows? - maybe even in galaxy, or more.

Isn't that a proof, that tomorrow brings hope?

Perhaps, and I hope we can get it done without having to round up all the idiots to send off to Mars. That would leave Mars over-populated, and earth with only you and me and about eight other people. But I'm not even sure that you other nine guys would make it!

A better approach is for nations and individuals to cease to act so foolishly, but even this will not work until education, opportunity, and stability are universally established so that people everywhere can thrive and interact beneficially.

. People must stop relying so much on aggression, dependency, and magical illusions, be content with just enough necessities and other possessions, focus on mastering themselves rather than others, and assume full responsibility for their own lives. A tall order for many people, but well within the capabilities of most.

It is a bit of over-simplification to say that cultivation of such private virtues will lead nations to embrace public virtues such as non-aggression, for nations must compete for resources and are often at odds over territorial and other issues. When most of us return to time-tested virtues of citizenship, begin to expect more of ourselves than of others we can make a start toward a better world.

The final ingredient to bring about a new world order is a stable world socio-economic system providing adequate education, health care, and employment for the vast majority of people.

Cultural chauvinism-- mutual antagonism over cultural and religious issues such that groups cannot live and let live-- is currently the greatest barrier to a better world order.

Until such steps are taken, most of us will have about the kind of world order we deserve, but the defenseless and the innocent will continue to suffer disproportionately.

Make the world endurable for others, though, and it will also be endurable for us.

nope....if you watched K Pax, the movie starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges, you would have understood that there will never be a better world order. There is a theory where some people believe that the world will collapse and expand time and time again, and each time the world re-emerges, the same mistakes and same type of events will always take place in this world.

Absolutely, I agree with you. I like progressive thinking. But I like to progress gradually from what is well in place even if it is not to the best of my satisfaction and belief.

I would therefore like to say that the world would definitely be a better place as the present world order improves with time. Presently, there are many problems in the world. If we look closely we find that most of them are not difficult to understand, and yet they are hard to be resolved. This makes me think that we can do much better with our collective lives. This is where I think hope is. You see, we can envision a better future for ourselves, which is to me is a very promising prospect in our mind.

Some people do lose their ability to imagine a better world, and some are too radical and impatient to be of any long-term use - they want change to take place overnight. This is a kind of denial of the world that we have build so far. This type of thinking generates a sense of unease and unaccomplishment in people. We need to feel that we have achieved something, or so much. And we need to be able to value what we have achieved and what we are now. Then we can understand how to develop further. But how can we do this when our sense of achievement is so different.

If we believe, as most of us do now, just in materialistic pursuits and try to amass as much physical possessions as we can then we cannot get rid of inequality in our societies. And inequality is the source of most of the contentions in the world. We can bring ourselves to a point in our mind where we can realise that values are more important monitory wealth.

It is possible that in the future we would realise that there are common values and similar pursuits that can make us think, believe and live in harmony with one another. We can develop a culture that values learning and self-discovery. Where people would seek experiences that would enhance their understand and awareness of themselves and people around them.

It definitely is. The thing is, we must find it in ourselves to make the change in order to start a better world. Your change will influence more people to make that change and when that domino effect spreads just like how evil spread throughout the Earth, we can have a better world order. It must start from the self.

I believe Gottfried Leibniz said that this world is "the best of all possible worlds", a world in which evil has it's essential role.

Just another thought: simplyshahid sais "we cannot get rid of inequality in our societies. And inequality is the source of most of the contentions in the world". I agree with what simplyshahid that inequality is the source of most conflicts in the world, but EQUALITY in any society is a dangerous pursuit, utopia. I live in a former communist country, and I know that equality of all people was one of the major goal of communism.
