Unfortunately, the African slaves were actually captured by other Africans. Sometimes these were "prisoners of war", but also often the result of slave raids by greedy traders who needed to fill their contracts with Portuguese, British and Dutch slave ships. These ships came to the West-African coast at regular intervals to buy and load their human cargo.
Therefore it is easy to blame the European slave traders and these are certainly not blameless, but the role of Africans should not be ignored.

Are you referring to the Africans who were captured and sold as slaves centuries ago? If so, they were captured in raids, kidnapped, etc. Here is some information on the subject.
If you'd like to read a very good book, which includes descriptions of Africans being captured and shipped to North America, read "Roots" by Alex Haley. It's fiction, but based on extensive research about his own family history. Fascinating.

I don't know all the methods of the vile slavers, what tools they used or how they managed to accomplish what they did - but I know that many of them had inside help - greedy Africans who sold out their own people for profit; this was a huge factor in the slave trade.
History is full of the mention of slaves, but primarily they were a spoil of war - when a country was conquered, the conquered people became slaves to the conquerors. It sucks, but that was the way of it. This was not the way of things for the Africans.
Wealthy people wanted (or thought they NEEDed) slaves, as opposed to paying out their precious money for servants, and where people thought that way, there were always folks who were willing to earn a living by supplying that demand. Especially once going to war wasn't a constant of the human condition.
I believe that Africa was seen as the perfect place to acquire the supply for that demand. There was a whole continent of people who were considered "backward" or "unsophisticated" because they didn't have their societies arranged in the "accepted" manner of other parts of the world. People who didn't expect evil intent from every stranger they met because they had no experience with that. At first, I'm sure this made them "easy pickings."
It may have also had a great deal to do with how they were seen in the world they were transported to - as perhaps not very bright because they were so easily captured. Add to that the fact that it was standard procedure to not allow slaves to be educated, and you have the beginnings of stereotypes. Many Africans found that life was much simpler in captivity if they just played stupid, so this was a factor in how they were perceived, also.
Nowadays we understand things better, and know that those stereotypes are ridiculous - but I think that the blacks of today still have to fight those centuries of being thought of the way that they were back then, and its got to be frustrating as all hell.
Kinda strayed from the question here, didn't I? My apologies.

80% of all those sold into slavery were done so usually by tribes at war, or because of greed. In most cases the tribe that won the war would sell prisoners into slavery. However, if a person had something someone else wanted, they were kidnapped and sold into slavery. In all cases it was blacks selling blacks. Rarely did it occur that whites attacked villages and captured slaves. The whites created a means to sell the slaves, and purchased them for use as a labor force, I think both races should accept some of the blame for the shame and degradation that was slavery.

Sugest that you watch either 'Roots' or 'Amistad' or both. Mostly guns & arrows & other such weapons were used to capture and then to drive people into holding pens until it was time to ship them off to various countries or rather colonies at first in The Caribean and then the Americas.
