ive had over 18 driving lessons since i was 17 (also lessons from family and friends ontop of that, im now 22) & i just cant seem to get into driving or get my head round it!..I dont get it because i do alot things on a daily basis that are far more complicated than driving a car but i just cant seem to learn or take in anything when it comes to driving!everytime i get in a car, its like the first time & my head just goes blank and i basically sh*t myself and do something stupid or just pull to the side of the road. its really annoying me as nearly every person i know drives and i see 80 year old's driving down the street but i cant! its embrassing, why do i have such learning difficulties when it comes to driving!? i don't have these problems with anything else just driving cars and rules of the road etc, i just cant take it in its really p*ssin me off!..also - just incase people think - no i dont have a phobia of crashing or anything like that so thats not it! any1else ave this prob?

When I was learning to drive I was so nervous that my legs shook so much, when stopped at traffic lights, and junctions that I thought I would not be able to use the pedals when I got the green light to go. I also couldn’t move my vision beyond a couple of yards to the front of the car and only used three of the gears in a five-gear car, anymore was just too much manoeuvring.

This was only a couple of years ago and I am in my fifties. The best advice I got was from my son, he had attended an advanced driver’s course where he picked up the tip. This was to talk out loud a running commentary on everything I was doing and everything I observed around me.

It felt very daft at first and I felt very self-conscious, but as my son said anyone seeing me would just think I was singing along with the radio. As soon as I took his advice and started talking – ‘Putting the key in the ignition, checking I’m not in gear, check mirror, child across the street, watch him, ok, safe now, gear, indicate etc. etc. I didn’t have time to be nervous. I was more observant of what was going on around me and I felt safer so began to relax a bit.

Still only used three gears up until about a month before the driving test, but I passed first go. As soon as the learner L plates came off the car – I felt like I had been driving all my life.

It sounds like you work yourself up or make yourself nervous. If you don't drive often, you may just not be getting the practice/experience you need. I don't have this problem, but I truely believe there are just some people that aren't cut out for driving. My friend has bad nerves so most of the time I'll drive her around when we get together.
I guess try not to work yourself up too much ... get comfortable and just drive... don't overthink all the rules and crap because honestly, a lot of driving is common sense and being aware of your surroundings.
Good luck.

Been there done that. I was 36 when I finally got my license. I had two husbands and a father along with several friends. I'd just panic. At 36 I hired a driving school and had my license in 6 hours. Believe me, it will be the best thing you ever do for yourself. Good Luck!
