Sony Vaio - desktop PCV-RX550. Came with 256 mb, SDRAM, expandable to 512 - which I have already done. Is there any way I can add more memory (such as external card or drive) without changing the mother board. Computer works great, and I hate to have to upgrade just to get more memory! Thanks in advance!

The computer is four and a half years old. Does it make sense to upgrade the mother board? (This would also upgrade the speed - now at 133 -slow by today's standards.) About how much would this cost? Thanks to all who have helped!

Nope, you are DONE. It's Maxed out. Now it is time to review your programs and uninstall the ones that you never use. Run MSCONFIG and uncheck the startup programs that you don't need. Get SpyBot Search & Destroy and AD-AWARE and keep your computer clean.

You are bringing this computer to the FINISH LINE, so be sure to keep good backups. Certainly, you don't want to have hard feelings about your good old computer when it reaches the end of it's life. Consider each day a blessing, but someday, your poor old computer will die.

(7 years is typical).

Looked @ the specs for your system and unfortunately 512MB is going to be the most you can upgrade on this system. I remember when the old 72 pin SIMMS had these expansion trees (you put this board into the SIMM slot and that board would hold 4 SIMM sticks) but haven't seen anything like that since the good old days.

There is nothing out there that you can use externally. All you can do is put two 512 in there to make it one gig. It looks like if you want to go faster you will need to upgrade the mother board.

I had one of those. I replaced the whole thing with a new motherboard, memory, case, and power supply about a year ago.

Your best solution is to upgrade the motherboard.
