I know they are "just bugs", and I am guilty of squashing ants and spiders that decide to invade my house, but I'm sure bugs feel pain. So why isn't biting the head off a beetle in Fear Factor considered cruelty? We would almost never consider biting the head off of a mouse, or a toad, or any other "real" animals.

Why aren't bugs given the same "rules" as other animals? BTW I hate bugs, but only the ones that sting, bite, or cause destruction to my property, and the the ones that kamakaze my face (like gnats) when I'm trying to enjoy a nice peaceful sunset. If they would just leave ME alone I would leave THEM alone!

Good question glad you asked it :) It's something that's also bothered me in watching Fear Factor. I'm amazed that the show hasn't got into trouble about it. I feel it is cruelty to a living creature - and it's got nothing to do with the "food chain" or "survival" ... those bugs are being killed, eaten alive so that people can win money - it's not a necessity, it's just a game show. One of the most disturbing episodes i saw was when they put all these bugs in a container and somehow this grinder thingy was making it into this liquidy paste so the creatures were being squashed alive and the paste that came out on the other end of the container was what the contestants had to swallow - i mean urghhhhhhhhhhhh. Some folks might argue that we stamp on ants, etc everyday without a second's thought but that's not a deliberate action - i mean we don't go about plotting the ant to squash as we walk by. As to why it's not considered cruelty on Fear Factor - i'm just guessing they're going more for the "disgusting" and "shock" aspect and they don't see anything else.

I agree, it's understandable if you're a native of the deepest darkest jungle and depend on such things to live, but not acceptable as TV entertainment. We should have more respect.
