Its difficult for a surveyor to pick up everything in a property especially whin its been painted or papered, they have to take the usual scenario.
It should however have been picked up by your conveyancing solicitor if the property was originally constructed of this material as it is now a legal requirement to advise if any asbestos is present.
As you quite rightly say, the asbestos is not dangerous - as long as it is left untouched and regularly painted to keep it sealed, so it was your choice to remove it.
I suggest you have a quiet word with your surveyor as they are insured against missing important things - be firm and you might get some comeback, but don't hold your breath.

you can get compensation. all valuers have indemnity insurance for when they make mistakes. compile a report, get the homebuyers report, the receipts, your purchase documents, and then go to a solicitor and just ask advice. they might just send a aletter for you. but you will know straight away whether or not the clause that said their may be asbestos in the artex has covered their backs.

looks like you got a dodgy surveyor or they sent the office newbie round without supervision seek legal advice as any form of asbestos has to be reported on surveys.
you might get enough to cover the cost of all work done and a new kitchen thrown in.
possibly enough left over for a week or two in Spain

Hi there.
Well, it depends what was included in the Survey, and what was excluded (check the smallprint), as some types of surveys are non-invasive -ie: no investigation holes are taken -it's just a visual inspection. Hope this helps.
P.s. -most asbestos is relatively harmless until disturbed (drilled, broken etc).
