The team with the most wins that isn’t a divisional winner is the wild card. The wild card team plays the highest seed team that isn’t in their division. Meaning if the Cardinals win the division and the Cubs win the wild card they both would play the other division leaders. This actually is better for baseball because usually there will be a rivalry between these two team and having them, play for a chance at the World Series is great for baseball. The Cubs are 10 ½ games out of the wild card and with 39 games left they still have a shot.

The top team in every division makes the playoffs. The Wild Card was created so teams in a tough division still have a chance of making the playoffs. There are two Wild Card spots, one for each league. So to see who gets a league's wild card spot, first take the league standings (like pretend their all in one big division). Then remove the leader of the East, Central, and West divisions. The team with the top record, after those three have been removed, get a playoff spot.

The wild card goes to the team in each league with the best record of non-division winners. As far as the Cubs, maybe next year.

The wild card in each league goes to the 1 NON-DIVISION winner with the best record. Right now, the White Sox would be the Wild Card in the AL, and the Reds in the NL. The division winners from each of the 3 divisions in each league get a playoff berth. Then the team with the best record, that didn't win their division, gets the wild card.
