It's not really quite like anything, is it? I suppose it could be compared to some old mythologies--the very personal story of the hero in a strange land, overcoming obstacles, finally taking on the monster...

It's a wonderful story. I think I prefer American Gods, but only slightly.

The only other books that come to my mind are Jasper Fforde's Tuesday Next and nursery crimes novels - they're in a way funnier and a bit more 'demanding.' And due of the dark, threatening atmosphere and strange characters Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby.
