There is a simple equation. You burn calories as you breath, walk, work, exercise.
The body needs 3,500 calories to create a pound of fat. To lose a pound of fat, you must eat 3,500 calories LESS than you need to run your body. A good weight loss diet will give you around 7000 calories LESS than you need to run your body each week, so you have a net weight loss of 2 pounds per week.
To lose weight, control your calorie intake, and increase your exercise level.
NOTE: If you reduce your calorie intake too much, your body will react like an animal's body does when there is no food around (like in winter for example) and will cut down the rate at which it uses up fat in the body. This has the reverse effect to the one you want - you will find it very difficult to lose weight. Stick with a diet that aims to lose two pounds a week, and this will not happen.
