Ear pierced in the right ear
Has a distinct liking for the colour pink (especially hot pink)
Likes really "pop-py" music
Thinks of a woman as a human, not just a sex object
Prefers a woman's personality and heart, not just her breasts
Likes romantic films, hates horrors, not too keen on actions, etc.
Prefers to go for a coffee / lunch than to go to a nightclub
Has "gay" actions, stances, tendancies, etc.

I do all of these and I'm as straight as can be. It really annoys me when people assume that I'm gay when I'm not. Why do people do it?

Here's some more info that might help.

I don't like lager (makes me heave)
I'm not keen on football. I was raised to support Man U, but I don't really follow it
I don't wear leather underwear, nor do I plan to
FYI, I also REALLY like shopping, which is also something people don't understand from a straight guy. Oh well.

It's about generalizations. Most of those traits have higher representations amongst the gay population thus where you see them someone is more likely to be gay. 'Likely' is the key word here. Generalizations are useful and indeed necessary, we use them all the time every day for all kinds of things. The problem arises when we forget that they are generalizations and make assumptions on that basis.

And as a straight guy who likes to wear girly make-up and has a flair for interior design, I get where you're coming from ;)

"Ear pierced in the right ear" This used to be a secret for being gay, in times when it was not really accepted.
When it comes to "Thinks of a woman as a human, not just a sex object. Prefers a woman's personality and heart, not just her breasts" It's probably because gay people are not sexually attracted to women and can be more relaxed when talking with them.
All the other things are just prejudice me.

Try not to worry about what people say.I know its easier said then done but people will always have views on people that arnt true.Thats just what us humans are like,It is wrong and we shouldnt judge people but unforchantly most of us are guilty of it!!
Any way you sound like the perfect bloke and im sure that one day you will make some girl very happy.I wish all straight men thought like you and us women would be a lot happier x

I think you will find that many of the humans in this world believe we are still in "cave man times" therefore are expecting men to go hunt wild animals and be aggressive enough to see off wild predators.Just as you believe inside, this is not real anymore, you just have to find your key social group which will definitely help balance your certain personality. ps.I'm not gay ,just grown up with lots of females around, but i do like hunting!! (joke)

In our society and culture we are taught to think and behave a certain way. These belief systems are called schemas. These are basically scripts we are taught through our institutions, ie, school, church, media - These schemas help us navigate through our worlds. Both men and women are expected to act certain ways. Men are suppose to be masuline, and hold back expressing emotion. Men are told that pink is a girls color, etc. However, when a person does not fit the mold of society, they are teased and made fun of. These people are assuming things based on what they have had ingrained into their heads. Don't mold yourself around society, let society mold itself around you.

Don't be annoyed, they're just trying to guess something about you based on limited information. These people don't really matter if they don't know you well enough to know that you're not gay.

Some have referred to these types of assumptions as being stereotypes, which is true to an extent. I prefer to think of it as applying a heuristic to a decision making process. :-)

The love of a man for another man, that is what now is known as gay,
when I was a young man "GAY" meant you were happy.
Now on the streat I hear the word "Gay" being used for what ever one person dislikes about another.

Ignorance, plain and simple. I fit that profile (apart from the hot pink, just don't like it and I'd clash with my friend anyway).

Oh and I'm straight.

Psst: if you like really pop-py music try Farrah. (Not a shameless plug.)
