The best example of selective hearing occurs when placing a guy in a room with his nagging girlfriend. For the most part, he ignores her and responds with a simple "Uh huh." When the topics of sex, food or hanging out with the guys come up, the man has a tendency to pay attention to the conversation and respond accordingly.

In general, selective hearing is the ability of a person to be able to have someone talking to them and only hear parts of the conversation that interest them. In other words only listening to what you want and ignoring the rest.
When it comes to a baby or child the age you are referring to it could be something more serious, especially if he isn't talking like he should, he may have partial deafness or the inability to understand or comprehend what he is hearing.
You need to take him to the doctor and have him evaluated to make sure there is nothing physically wrong with him.
I wish you luck.

I would seriously suggest that you take him for a hearing test. By the age of 3 he should have been speaking in short sentences, if he does not have special needs. An audiologist will be able to give you games to play with him that encourage speech development.

Even at 5, he is still male. put a grown man in front of the TV and see what happens.Males hear what they want to. But on the other hand, you really need to get his hearing checked. Its possible that he just cant hear you.
