Very occasionally, you will see an opportunity locally, which you can apply for.
Otherwise, all such offers I have seen are scams, which want you to send them a fee for an "information packet", which never actually leads you to work. Maybe if you start up one of those kinds of businesses, you can actually make a profit by collecting fees from the unsuspecting!

What you will have to do is start soliciting companies in person. There are many defense contractors and major corporations in need of such services. They have a preference for people who work from an offsite location in order to save office space (which is often limited) and to have less liability for employee safety, health insurance, and other benefits. They pay pretty well (roughly $40-$60 an hour) because the expectation is that you will be available to work when they need you. That often means many late night evenings and long weekends.
There really is no advanced notice or predictability You might get an assignment on Monday evening that must be delivered by 8AM on Tuesday. Sometimes you can get a very big assignment on Friday that will take all weekend to complete because it must be delivered by Monday morning so if you had plans for the weekend, you can forget it. If you do not meet the deadline chances are that you will probably not get paid anything for your efforts.
So even though the opportunities are there it is not something that anyone can do. It is very demanding on your time, patience, and attention to detail. If you have no other distractions from home or wherever you decide to work from, this might be a perfect opportunity.
