I have been married for 4 years. My husband has an addiction problem but is trying really hard to beat it. What can I do to assist him everyday and especially on days that he fails?

First of all, YOU alone cannot help him. Secondly- if he isn't serious about quitting- it won't happen. It sounds like he is serious so.... I would recommend a support group type of help. AA, CA, Alanon for you both. I also would suggest strongly that you and he together find activities where there is no drinking involved or alcohol available. The goal is to stay busy/occupied without drinking. This means you too. Staying sober is work. It isn't easy, and not always fun at first. Hang in there.

Replacing one addiction for another is a trap. Justified by thinking one is better than the other. For an addict, dinking beer is just as bad as shooting heroin. Snorting cocaine is just as bad as smoking pot. BOTH are dangerous for an addict.

Be proud of our husband every day. Weather or not he falls. It may take falling many many times. But hang in there, seek help, and be encouraging.

He needs to be in a program like AA depending on his addiction. He needs a sponsoe that he can call on days he fails or feels like using. You can easily become a co-dependent because of your relationship. Its really hard to be involved with an addict (I was involved in one)

Keep him busy.Tell him everyday that you are proud of him and reassure him daily that he is loved,On the weekend stay busy.Go for long walks, hiking, anything you like.I have also experienced this with my husband. He is clean 3 months now.Working a full time job helps. When he comes home supper is ready,we eat then go walk for awhile.I have found that keeping them busy and constantly reassuring them works wonders.Good luck God bless:O)

He needs to get into a rehab place to be quiting all of that stuff. Look into your insurance and see if it is covered, if its not then most places will help you with the costs. You can't just go cold turkey on things like that, and that is why he is drinking now.

Addiction is a life long battle. Sometimes it is beyond your help. You both would benefit from support groups. You cant do it for them they have to want it for themselves. Try to find a treatment program or counselor and ask for help.

Even though Al-anon is for families of alcoholics, it can help families of all substance abuse problems. You need to learn how not to be co-dependent. Your husband needs to accept responsibility for his own actions. Let him fail, don't bail him out. You cannot fix him, he must be willing to do that himself.

You cannot do this without help. He needs to be in continuous treatment. You are to close to the situation to be any significant help.
