I think its a mix of both. some may be inherited, some from how theyre brought up and some people are probably born quieter individuals. some people also seem to be more shy in certain situations

Well.. I don't think it's a 'one or the other' question. It's all back to the nature vs nurture question and I think that it's a little of both.
When I was a small child, I was not shy. I would walk up to anyone, I would do anything. I was the antithesis of shy. But I started going to school, and realized that people make fun, kids are mean, not everyone is going to like you.. and I became shy.
Then you get over it. It took a long time. I would get nervous if I had to give a speech and would do almost anything to get out of it. I hated working in groups if I didn't know the people.
Eventually, with the right support (parents, friends, teachers) a person would be able to get over being shy.
So, I think that maybe some people are born a little more or less sensitive than others to people.. if you don't have the support or the help to get over being a shy person, then you stay that way.

It's not nessarily from the way they are raised. It's a combination of two things. Love and life expeirences. If you have a lousy life but still get loved unconditionally then more than likely you wont be shy. However crappy life, no love you not only shy but might be lashing out at society for that attention and love that you so desperately needed as a developing child!

I disagree with jls1znv9999's stupid comment about shyness being because you have a lousy upbringing and no love from parents.
oh pleeeasse!
I think I was just born shy and very sensitive...my bf is the same way. To be honest I really embrace my shyness now..I don't think being quiet and reflective instead of full on extrovert isn't such a bad thing..well from my prespective anyway.

I think it's genetic. I've heard stories about my grandparents traits, watched my parents traits, witnessed my siblings traits, (and my own) and observed my childrens traits.
Shyness, or any personality trait, seems to run in families.
