Astronaut is the english language name for a person who has traveled in space. Traditionaly these men and woman have gone through rigorous training and entered "space" abord a NASA space ship. Cosmonaut is the english language translation of what the Soviet Union called their space travelers begining with the first human in space Yuri Gregarin. The term "Cosmo" is sometimes credited to the idea that the Soviet Union was Communist at the time of Gregarin's flight or that they just wanted to differentiate from their at that time enemy us the US.
There is a distance limit that NASA accepts which qualifies a space traveler as an Astronaut. I think it's about two thousand miles above Earth's surface. Some trained NASA astronauts and space flight purists are concerned that with private flights at this height become more common with successful private and commercial flights (like space ship 1) the title of Astronaut will be belitteled.
Lets hope we all get to be Astronauts. After all we are all flying through space on Space Ship Earth.

Many differences
Cosmonauts are from Russia and they came first.(The first person in space was cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin), and the terms cosmonaut comes from the Greek words kosmos and nautus meaning sailor of the universe.
Astronauts come from the USA and astronaut comes from the Greek words astros and nautus meaning salior of the stars.
Other than that, they do the same job.

They are the same thing. The old USSR's main word for space translates into "cosmos." But "naut" is a latin root, used by many languages. It is universal. Cosmonaut is Cold War slang to differentiate Soviet spacewalkers from starmen from the rest of the world.

There is no real difference. Cosmo is what the Russians call their space person, and Astro is what America calls theirs.
