You have to remember when he dislocated that bone, he tore it right out of the socket, taking ligaments and all with it. It's going to hurt for a few days. If it is still giving him major pain after three days, you need to call the doctor and discuss it with him. Use a pain scale to rate his pain. Have him tell you on a scale from one to ten, with ten being the greatest and one being the lowest number, and you can get an idea of how much and how often he is hurting. GIve all medicines as scheduled, and don't wait until the pain gets so bad he can't bear it to give pain meds, give it when he starts hurting. They are more effective if given when the pain starts, rather than in the middle of a full blown pain crisis.
And, by all means, call that doctor and ask him what else he would have you do.

Yes it is normal. It can go on for a long time but if things are not better by tomorrow I would call the doctor and go in to be rechecked. My shoulder was not put back totally correctly and it hurt for months. Finally, I went to a masseuse who really was in tune and after the second treatment I heard this incredible crack. The pain went away immediately.

There is no medicine for this. Better contact 001-519-746-4633 for a doctor in Toronto who takes only 5 minutes to set the dislocated shoulders and that too without pain afterwards. Its my personal experience.

Did they give him any muscle relaxants? I don't think he's supposed to be moving it for the first 48 hours. You need to check back with the hospital, or your doctor for a follow up. A shoulder that doesn't go back in right can cause a rotator cuff tear, and that's a nasty surgery.

oooops ! Nelson you may have torn a muscle. And if so, it NEEDS an MRI to confirm this. (xrays were not "clear") An Orthopaedic surgeon will be the one who performs the surgery. Without doing anything to your shoulder now may just prolong the suffering and the pain increases day by day (per my own experience) After a year, healing is almost complete and I'm back to leading a normal, active life again

I dislocated my shoulder whilst weight lifting alone. I pulled it back in by grabbing the weight perch. It hurt for about a year after, but I never went to the doctor. Maybe I did additional damage by relocating it myself.

The joint can swell up and restrict movement for a couple of months. It does not help to stretch it to the point it is painful. You have to take anti-inflammatory drugs and maybe get cortisone shots so it will all settle down and the joint will open up.

It sounds terrible to say, but he could suffer from pain in this area for the rest of his life. This isn't a good part to "bounce back," so to speak. I had a maniscal (sp?) tear in my knee, and have never been the same.
