I have just spent ten days trying to get BT to connect the internet to my new address. Today, they have just informed me that they cannot find a bt line for this address and it will cost me £128 to install it. The thing is, I have a phone and when I plug it in, it gives out a dialling tone, but you cannot dial out so the tennant before me may have had just incoming calls. Now, this shouldn't affect the internet connection because I only had incoming calls on my previous phone. What's going on? Anyone advise?

It makes you wonder if it was a free install for someone on the basis it was incoming only. (elderly or infirm)

Perhaps they now want the money they originally waived?

Is it definitely a BT master socket?

I had a dial tone for months after i was last cut off lol! i had b/band too, even though the phone was cutt off i could still use the b/band cause of the dial tone, this was 3mths worth lol. Making up for it now though nothing in life is FREE
.
The prices are rediculous! ive had bt braodband installed again, this time they provided me with the wireless b/band! how great! Forgot to advise me that i need a wireless adaptor 2 use it, im a pc novice, 1) so im paying for somat i cant use correctly. 2) ive spent a fortune on technical support line cause it aint free. 3) spent hours finding out wat may be causing the ethernet connection not to work. 4) just received my bill of 68.00 for the crap service and no advice, 5) was told today it was my pc and i have to now perform a task of rebooting the whole thing back to its origianl state and loose all my downloads!!!! GREAT!!!! MY view is that its a problem with YAHOO INC, the browser is faulty. so the answer to your question may be they havent closed the last persons account and ended their contract, the line is their so tell em to get their arses into gear and sort it !!!!!

Your guessing is correct. The previous tenant might not have taken internet connection. But shelling down 128 pounds is really punishing. If you need internet connection immediately, there is no other alternative. Before you pay, I suggest to check the line and phone instrument once. If the problem is solved by this, you could be saved, Good luck!

Probably because the previous connection ISNT a BT connection (as in Cable and Wireless, etc), in which case they have to remove it and then install a BT connection.

I thought this only cost £75 though - they must have hiked up the cost then....

are you certain its a BT phone you are dialling out on?

if its got a dial tone then try ringing 151 or 152, or even the operator (100?) and see if its answered and if so can they tell you what number that line is (or even which company is operating on that line (it could be a non bt line or even a cable line)

phone up bt again telling the phone company you cannot make out going calls since the Internet is connected to your phone socket that could be all that's wrong just dial 150 and that should put you straight through

ring 150 off the phone and you will go through to the customer services of the phone provider. ringing 150 should work even though it is incoming only.

if the phone is connected, someone must be paying for that line. most bt boxes have a bt logo on it. if it is cable then there will be another box on the wall on your front room and it will say telewest or ntl on it.

with bt the dial tone is a continuous tone. telewest it a broken dial tone. dunno if that helps?

I would talk to the non-BT Internet Service Provider that you intend to use. They may know what to do in such a situation and at least they will be motivated to help you.

BT only install adsl on a BT line,

If the existing line is Cable (NTL etc) for instance,
they wont do it!
