I recently was given a tank that came with a cichlid. I already have a Jack Dempsey, and since they are the same size, I put them in together. So far, so good. The fish that came with the tank is about the same shape as the Jack Dempsey, body, fins, etc. The new one is a pinkish tan with vertical black stripes, and a black dot at the base of the tail. All the fins are lined with a pretty orange-pink. The eyes are lighter and kind of protruding, compared with the Jack dempsey, which has flat, dark eyes. The new one's mouth seems more pointed than that of the Jack, also. Can anyone tell me what I have?

I don't think it's a convict, they are black and white, according to the pictures I've seen, doesn't look like a pink convict at all. There are some very faint blue speckles on the gill covers. The overall color of the fish is a medium pinkish tan color. Looking closely at the centers of the scales, they appear to be gray-blue in the center. Black stripes start right behind the head, becoming more intense closer to the tail. I don't know what it is, definitely some sort of cichlid. I'm just glad it and my Jack Dempsey, Beast, are getting along, as they are both about 7 inches long, and I imagine they could do each other some damage!

Nope, definitely not a Flowerhorn. Much duller, predominately tan. The closest thing I have seen is a Cichlasoma Umbriferi in a book in the local pet shop. I don't think it's that, either. Hope not, they get huge and are really, really aggressive. But thanks!

If your new fish is indeed a flower horn as ronald says, it will eventually kill your Jack. Flower horns are one of the meanest most agressive cichlids out there. The only cichlid meaner, that I know of, is the dovii. They both get huge and are totally intolerant of other fish in their areas.

Piranhas are meaner, but they are tetras... yes, tetras.

Check in with "cichlidforum.com" they will identify it for you if you post a picture. You must join the forum, but it costs nothing and is one of the best forums on cichlids that I know of.

You will learn a lot by just reading through the various threads pertaining to your fish.

a lot of cichlids are ordinary to reproduce, yet this is not how i'd flow about doing it with any of them. the finest thanks to get cichlids to type a breeding pair is to enable them choose their own friends, meaning putting a honest type of youthful fish (of a similar species, obviously) mutually and prepared till some them pair off. At this element, with maximum cichlids, you'd be cautioned to get rid of something else of the commencing fish, because the recent pair will probably antagonize them. i'd attempt commencing with one species/pair at a time; in case you do have more effective than one breeding pair of maximum cichlids, they'll spend all their time protecting their respective broods from one yet another in a tank that small. think ofyou've got diverse breeding pairs of dwarf cichlids in a fifty 5-gallon tank, yet those are not the finest to reproduce (now to not teach that this is frequently really expensive to get sufficient of them to get a breeding pair). And certain, it would not get extra accessible than convicts. purely upload water. even with this, you're call's kribensis, why do not you try a number of those?

From your description, your cichlid could be one of several cichild species or even a hybrid. At first, I thought of a Convict, but the pointy head sounds like Firemouth. Can you add any other descriptive facts? Are you even sure it's a cichlid originating from the Americas?
