The term Blockbuster actually wasn't used until the mid-seventies. It means that on its first weekend a film is shown on as many screens as possible (block the screens - meanwhile worldwide). Most blockbusters bring in a high percentage of their profits in the first weeks. The first ever Blockbuster was Spielberg's Jaws - the marketing was broad with trailers in cinemas and on TV.
Blockbuster also means that a film must (presently) at least bring in $ 200 million.
Films from the 1960s consequently were no Blockbusters, the marketing strategies were different then. None of the all-time USA box office hits was made in the 1960s (non adjusted data - Gone With the Wind would otherwise still be in the Top 10): http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross
Among those films that did well at the box office in the 1960s probably were: To Kill a Mockingbird, Psycho, Inherit the Wind, The Graduate, Spartacus, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago and all those Elvis Presley movies, etc. You can check all box office data on imdb.com

Psycho 1960
West Side Story 1961
Bonnie & Clyde 1967
The Graduate 1968
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969
Goldfinger 1964
You Only Live Twice 1967
The Great Escape 1963
Magnificent Seven 1960
Odd Couple 1968
To Sir With Love 1967
Lilies of the Field 1963

Back then that's when movies had great plots, story lines, excellent cast, hardly no special effects, that made the movie seem unrealistic. You wanted to stay at the theatre to see the movies over and over. I seen all the movies and you should to so you'll know why they where excellent movies that made large sums of money back then.

Who has time for video clips whilst Obama is having Airforce-a million and an F-sixteen buzz downtown ny and the Statue of Liberty for a photograph op? That sounds greater like a action picture than something. Mutant
