The langage of law tends to be very particular about words. How would it be if they replied in Latin?
I guess that as French is the language of the law in France, that a legal letter is probably only legal if it is in French. The translation of that legal document is your responsibility, if you do not understand the law or French.
If they sent you a French letter and a translation, then it would be the French letter which would be the official document. It therefore makes sense rather than for them to make the translation, for you to get an independent translation at your own cost.

The French are very self-centred about their language. One might say 'arrogant'. It's not quite as simple as that, though - they would probably explain that they reply in French because that is the language they know best so it is natural to use that for communication since they can be sure that they have the sense right. If they replied in English, they could not be sure that the meaning would be correct or clear. "Why use English when it is much easier to say in French? You can understand French can't you? Pouf!"
I'm afraid there is no use complaining about it - you will have to live with it in order to maintain good relations with your clients!

The English assume all countries speak English, and it's out right that they do. Do you speak French? Look at visitors to our country how at least attempt to speak English when out shopping / going for a meal.
Do we do that? On the majority no, we don't. It's our olf colonial arrogance, and it'll never change.
Learn French or hire a translator.

because they are ignorant?
actually no, although i do have a strong belief that unless the other person prefers english, you should speak to them in their native tounge, apart from the japanese, apparently they are weary about outsiders who speak theyre language with efficiency, which is kind of ironic for me since the only languages i can speak are french and japanese :P
Maybe the french think you are being ignorant, and will reply in such a way.....easy fix.....learn french
