German is an Indo-European language.
The majority of the German vocabulary is of Germanic origin, with words of Latin, old Greek, French, and English origin added at different times.
Nouns have one of three genders and are declined using four cases. Grammatical gender is not dependent on natural gender - e.g. "das Maedchen" ~ the girl is in German of neutral grammatical gender while of natural female gender.
Verbs are conjugated and verb forms differ depending on tense and pronoun used. German knows three different past tenses, one present tense, and two different verb forms for the future. There are no progressive forms, but there are different verb forms for reality ("Wirklichkeitsform", "Indikativ") and for possibility ("Moeglichkeitsform", "Konjunktiv").
Adjectives are declined together with the nouns they are referring to.
Pronunciation and spelling are close to each other, exceptions are so-called "Fremdwoerter".

Most of the answers so far are good.
If you can speak Gujarati, one of the many Indian languages, then get a dictionary, now say the thing you want to say in Gujarati, replace word for word with German word and correct tens and you will have correct perfect German translation.
This is because both languages have same structure for a sentence. Both languages have very little exception to grammatical rules. There may be other languages were you can interchange the words.
