Geothermal heat pumps are used here in Canada. We're as cold or colder than there. The minute that you get far enough below ground, that the temperature is above freezing, you can get heat. In most places this is just 6 feet down. They are used here, not just to supplement house heating, but to do ALL the heating , Air conditioning and domestic hot water production. I'll post a link here, to help you understand ground source heat pumps (geothermal energy)

The above-ground climate doesn't matter since the temperature underneath is the same.
I think the problem you'll find is that "the Alps" (you're a bit vague there!) are elevated, so it's a long way to the hot stuff!. You'll also find that with the ground being mainly granite, there's an awful lot of rather tough rock to get through between the surface and said hot stuff.
Geo-thermal energy is only efficient when easily accessible. This is where it's evident on the surface in places such as Iceland.
Look for 'hot-springs'.

They have been doing this for the last 30 years in the Swiss Alps.
There are also hot water baths for people to enjoy. This combined with hydro-power and solar power makes an energy efficient home that isn't bad for the enviroment!

The time period geothermal refers to warmth resources in the earth. the nice and comfortable temperature is used to prepare water/geothermal fluid to extreme rigidity steam which then is going to turbines. those turbines turn turbines that produce skill/electrical energy it quite is then disbursed to skill houses inclusive of the heater equipment.
