I loved Whale Rider. What a great movie for young girls to see! I really liked the tenacity of this young girl and how she stood up to the chavinistic attitudes of her grandfather without being disrespectful. A very empowering tale and great insight into the Maori culture.

I saw it but wasn't as impressed. I just have a hard time understanding abstract movies. And I was crying at the end when she just kept holding onto the whale as it was diving! But I'm glad the grandfather finally respected her.

Loved it. The cinematography is stunning. The story heartbreaking. An insight in a secular way of life.
If you enjoy Maori movies and culture, you should watch Once were warriors, extremely good show.
