There are four types of unemployment:

1) Frictional unemployment - the type that occurs from normal labour turnover - from people entering and leaving the labour force and the ongoing creation and destruction of jobs;

2) Seasonal unemployment - many jobs are only available at certain times of the year (e.g. ski resort workers, fruit picking and sheep shearing)

3)Cyclical unemployment - fluctuating unemployment over a business cycle - increases during a recession and decreases during an expansion

4) Structural unemployment - arises when change in technology or international competition change the skills needed to perform jobs or change the locations of jobs (e.g. automation of a production line causes assembly workers to lose their jobs)
