Nearly all the religions of the world were established and organized by men. Those who chose to pursue the religious life were intent, in one way or another, to get closer to the meaning those religions offered, and usually, by design, nearly all of those were men. To over simplify, the religious life is portrayed as being one where life's passions are balanced and often described as needing to be under control so as to make it easier to transcend the profane and get to the sacred. For a man to do this, it is reasoned by some that he must not have anything intimate to do with women or he will lose control. Therefore the vow of celibacy. No wife or lover, no problem.
It is interesting to note that for nearly all men who attempt this, this leads to a serious problem of putting themselves into internal conflict, which disturbs the very passions that are supposed to be under control. And it puts him into external conflict with half the worlds population which happens to be female. Most religions have this anti-female bias hidden in their rules, which might give women something to think about.

Celibacy is denying the natural sexual urges of the body. For some people this is easy, but most people need sex, once they've enjoyed it. If churches were to honour our god-given sex drives, they would have to accept women's sexual power and that would mean that they might not be happy staying barefoot, pregnant and ignorant. Since all the religions on the face of the earth today were created by men, they want to keep women out of power, especially those who claim that woman is the root of all evil (ie. Adam and Eve).

The vow of celibacy means that those who take it are not allowed to engage in any sexual activity. The catholic church uses it for the following reasons: sex outside of marriage is a sin according to the bible. Catholic priests are not allowed to get married, so, in order not to have sex they take a vow. (This is the theory, but don`t ask how it`s kept. )

My guess is that it was established to avoid that priests favorize their own family, or that they would leak professional secrets to their family. Of course, they still could have brothers and sisters, but the fact that they (officially) had no children lessened the risk.
