Legendary Doc Hudson Passes Away
Former Cal Rugby Coach Dies at Age 89.

Oct. 20, 1999

Berkeley - One of the Cal's legendary coaches, Miles "Doc" Hudson, passed away on Saturday, October 16 at the age of 89.

Hudson has an incredible legacy of success in the sport of rugby, having coached the Golden Bears for 36 seasons beginning in 1939. During his time at Cal, he became the "winningest" rugby coach in U.S. history with a 339-84-23 record.

The veteran coach, who was also a well-known local dentist, also had a major influence on establishing rugby as a sport in the United States.

"Doc is one of the forefathers of the sport of rugby in this country," said current Cal and U.S. National Team coach Jack Clark. "He is one of just a small handful of people who made the sport popular in this country and his record of success is absolutely unprecedented.

"We've had some success here in recent years (Cal has won nine straight national collegiate rugby titles), but you multiply that times 36 and you'll have an idea of the standard he set. Doc laid the groundwork for the success we enjoy today."

Born on November 15, 1909, Hudson came to the U.S. to attend Cal at the age of 19. After graduating from Cal, he attended dental school at UCSF. It was at that time that he became intimately involved in rugby, first as a player, then as the freshman coach at Cal.

In 1996, Hudson was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame.

His is survived by his wife of 62 years Ladene, his four children, Bob, Doug, Ron and Shelley and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a gathering following the service at the "Doc" Hudson Rugby Fieldhouse on campus. Donations may be made to "Friends of Cal Rugby" in his memory and mailed to the Bear Backer Office, Dept. of Athletics, 2223 Fulton St, Berkeley, CA 94720.

We have an exclusive look for you today at Doc Hudson (voiced by Paul Newman), one of the character cars featured in Disney/Pixar's "Cars" opening June 9th.

"Cars" features a cast which also includes Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, “Larry the Cable Guy”, Cheech Marin, George Carlin, Richard Petty, Michael Keaton, Tony Shalhoub, John Ratzenberger, Michael Wallis, Paul Dooley, Jenifer Lewis.

Lightning McQueen (voice of OWEN WILSON), a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. On route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town’s offbeat characters –including Sally (a snazzy 2002 Porsche voiced by BONNIE HUNT), Doc Hudson (a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, voiced by PAUL NEWMAN), and Mater (a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced by LARRY THE CABLE GUY) – who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame and sponsorship.

It's a character from 'Cars' - the film my 3.5 year old is currently obsessed with. I could tell you all about him (have to read the book every night to him!) but I'd fall into a coma of boredom.
