If you're looking to buy (or sell) get an agent to do a Comparative Market Analysis. Takes only a few minutes if they know how, and that's the best information aside from actually seeing what it sells for.
Historical sales prices can be discovered through the county, but I suspect that's not what you're interested in.

You can usually go to the county auditor or recorder’s website to find out what was paid for the property. As for finding out the current value ignore sites like housevalues.com. Their information is so inaccurate it isn’t helpful. You can call a Realtor if you are serious about buying or selling a property and they will perform those services for you or go to www.realtor.com and search for comparable houses in your zip code. Looking at what others are asking for homes is generally a good indicator of value if you don’t want to have someone do a comparable market analysis.

There are many tools that are free such as; zillow.com, realtor.com. You can also go to a local realtor website and search for properties that are currently for sale in your market area most of these sites will allow you to narrow down the search and make it very specific so you can get a good estimate of comparable properties. You can also contact and appraiser in your area and have them run a comparable search. The appraiser may charge for this service.

Try http://www.zillow.com
Beware that their system is in early beta. From personal experience, their values can be very far off the mark.
