The best is to get either Norton or McAfee and then also download AVG or other free Antivirus programs. That way you have a layered detection. Get a firewall and anti-spyware software as well (free anti-spyware is usually better then bought ones). Again layer everything. If you are still having problems switch to Firefox and have it clear all personal data after each session. I do all the above and I haven't had an attack in 3 years.

Norton, no.... Norton and McAfee are like the starter AV's; sorta like AOL for the internet... many virii target these two pieces of software and disable their protection... since they are the most common AV...
AVG was decent in the past, then it went downhill... I don't know how it stands nowadays...
nod32 is pretty decent, definitely not a resource hog and a fast scanner...
Avast.. pretty decent as well....
Kaspersky, yes... Kaspersky definitely takes the cake as the best AV, in my opinion at least...
Edit:
As we can see, those two are by far the most common anti-viruses... if you were writing a virus, wouldn't you want it to disable the main threat(s) that stop it from spreading?
And for that person who said you've chosen a bad OS, very not clever... ever hear of... root-kits? If Linux was the most commonly used OS, it'd have its on share of virii, Linux is only as secure as you make it...

i can only advise you ,but in all the years i have used computers i have not come accross a better anti-virus than avast 4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
the reason for this is just the shear simplicity and all round good protection it offers,i installed it on a p.c that had prevously had norton on,and behold it found 11 viruses that norton didnt pick up,and this is a FREE program, were as norton costs up to £50 per year
why not look at this link to see what other users think and i will leave it up to you......http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3640-2239_4-10533644.html?tag=tab_ur
you wont regret using it
good luck

I use Ubuntu so I don't need an antivirus. The chance of getting a virus or spyware on Linux is very, very small. I guess you've chosen a bad operating system if it's vulnerable to viruses. Linux is free and most people who use it claim that it's better than Windows.

I have used almos all and most of the major anti viruses are ok. Many people will say Norton but as far my personal experience with norton goes, its a good software but slows down the boot speed.
I am presently using Avast and I have found it reasonably ahead of all others presently available in the market.

Download AVG by Grisoft on Download.com. There is a free edition or you can pay for the advanced edition. I recommend the free edition, it's all you really need for viruses, but also install Ewido Antispyware from the same company (Grisoft) free or advanced versions also, from download.com. This will control other malware such as adware and spyware. Between the two of them you will be very well protected. I promise!
