My roommate uses a LOT of bleach each time she washes her laundry. It usually take 2-3 loads of my own clothes for the bleach smell to go away. Is excessive use of bleach bad for the washer?

yes, the bleach can cause nasty blockages in the waste pipe because of the reaction between it and the soap.....Usually forms a white soft brick like substance.....also the high alkaline content can have a nasty effect on rubber seals after a while....if i were you id get her to buy oxi (in wash) cleaner, as this will do what she is trying to accomplish with bleach, but without the damage...
p.s. yes i am a man ...lol

Vinegar in the washing machine? yes, but not with the detergent. Detergent is usually basic. Basic meaning the opposite of acidic. Just like when you get car-battery acid on you, you add baking soda. Soda is basic. Or the vinegar/baking soda in a bottle trick. So, with that in mind, adding vinegar would be good, but to neutralize any residual bases. Cleaning the wash-drum.. vinegar is a good choice. White vinegar. Clorox bleach is a chlorine bleach whereas Hydrogen peroxide is an oxygen bleach. Chlorine will dissipate slowly or you can neutralize it and is a better whitening versus peroxide breaks down to water and oxygen, needing no neutralization. Putting vinegar in your softener bin, especially if chlorine bleaching would be a good idea. Cheers

If you can smell it after the clothes have been rinsed she is using to much. It won't hurt the washer, but it sure will do the number on her clothes. Excessive bleach will wear down fabric and make it wear out sooner than it needs to.

Holy cow!! I would say so! I use a fair amount of bleach and an extra rinse and it usually is gone with the next load. I would tell her to cut down on it ALOT. I'd say no more than one cup per load? Maybe even half a cup!!

Why does your roomate use any bleach? Follow the instructions on the bleach container, but in a normal load of whites, a quater cup show be plenty.

No, it won't hurt the washer. The smell does stay around a long time though.

no bleach will no hurt the machine,Ive used it in mine for the last 25years without replacing any of the pipes or any of the internal parts. You only need about 25ml to 30ml per wash.Bleach is also an excellent disinfectant and can be used to purify water in an emergency

No, not if you use it in the right quantities. She's probably using way too much.
