I would guess that comes from a large segment of people can actually read music. I like and can play classical music and can often pick the best R&B song at the awards shows.

It may be that that arrogance is actually an inferiority complex and they are responding out of defense. For every type of music there is a positive and a negative perception. I listen to a broad array of music genres, and enjoy most of them. My father loved classical music so we heard much of it on 78 rpm records. I love Broadway Musicals, and have an extensive collection of lps and CDs. I know the rock and roll of the 50's,60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and beyond. I love Delta Blues by the old masters, and Modern Blues by the BB Kings, and Muddy Waters and Eric Clapton's. I listen to Country and Western, and you can find Opera on my shelves. Big Band Music is a wonderful departure from current music. Ever hear Bossa Nova? I bought the first lp by Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto with Desafinado on it. It takes an open minded person to listen to what is out there. It is all good!

Too many people are closed minded. I listen to lots of different genres of music. I sang chamber music in middle school. I used to hang out in a country/western bar, and do country dancing on the dance floor. I've gone to metal concerts. I've listened to rap. Most rap i don't like, but some old stuff is very cool and funny. I like alternative, and new wave of the 70's/80's. I like some old punk rock. If I give one of those old folk music tunes a listen, like "Little Green Apples", or "Puff the Magic Dragon",It feels good! I think back of when i was a kid, when things were so easy! No work to do or bills to pay, just go to school. It was a time of innocence.
I never walked up to a person and said, "hey! you listen to (musical genre)? you suck!! That music is so lame!" To each their own. That's what makes life so great. We are all different, and can enjoy whatever music we want.

It is about status and class. Upper class people go to the opera, listen to classical music, they think it is high class to do so. They look down on a novice, just learning. They are of the opinion that other genres are not really music, and it takes less talent/knowledge to compose and perform other kinds. They even look down on Pop's night at the symphony, because the music appeals to the masses, the insinuation is the unwashed masses.
I like all kinds of music, with a few exceptions, I think the person who listens to many kinds of music is the better educated.

my answer will upset many, but from 50 yrs of observations, music is for many a personall way to say I"M HERE! notice me, or hate me and deal with it.... which of course is kind of arrogant.
Music being personal, yet the person playing whatever type they love to hear, cannot comprehend usually why others wouldnt like it. They think, that since they love it, most should love it also. Its an intriguing fact. Especially these days when it comes to oddly enough, COUNTRY music, or RAP....also some males tend to be almost primitive like in adolescence when they play their music loud as if to warn other Males how tough they are, like a turf thing...

Why? You ask? Because some people are just arrogant!!!! That's just who they are... so why should they be any different about their music? I, myself, feel that if they are close minded about....music of all things...then they must be close minded about many other things. It's really too bad for them because they are really missing out on a lot of wonderful things in life!!
I think that variety is the spice of life, kinda like food, you never know if you like it until you try it...RIGHT?

In what regard? And, is music any different than anything else? Some people are arrogant and some aren't.

Some people think that the music they create, or like to listen to is the only form of *good* music. They are small minded obviously, because there is a whole world of different types of music to listen to and love. The ones who limit themselves to one style really have no idea about what music is, and what its meant to be.

yeah, know what you mean. The people who say that they are musically eclectic and only listen to opera or anime tunes. People that think if you aren't a big fan of rap, you're racist. People that think that because you like one or 10 songs of a certain genre then you must enjoy all. I am a believer that if it sounds good then jam on it. If not then change the C.D., radio, T.V., IPOD, whatever. Good Q.

Because musical quality is subjective, and many elitists believe their musical preferences are better than the next man's. You cannot possibly be an elitist sports fan, unless you cheer for a winner like... well... I can think of two teams (one in MLB and one in college basketball, and neither are my absolute favorites to put it mildly). There are no "winners" and "losers" when it comes to quality of music... only in one's mind there is.
