the japanese example is good, but i was wondering whether there was a time when the whole population was deprived of its rights, and then restored

During wartime yes. The treatment of British Italians in the early days of WW2 and Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor, for example......

But I'm still trying to think of a peacetime emergency which produced the actions you describe.

Maybe the McCarthy witchhunts (in the 50s) might count as such an occassion.

Are you talking about the US? If so, the Second World War would be a perfect example. For instance, the internment of Japanese, German, and Italian citizens. (Yes Germans and Italians were thrown in camps also.) Their civil rights were restored after the war.

Yes. The Civil War in the U.S. World War II in the U.S., especially if you had a "Japanese face" (although later on in the war Japanese Americans were recruited and fought valiantly... for the U.S!). During times of war civil rights are often restricted in this country. I'm guessing it probably happened during WWI as well.

Yes. Japanese-Americans and Japanese immigrants were interred during WWII, then released after the war. Few reparations were made.

yes, when i was charged with murder; but later, they let me go because i was found innocent by the Court.
