Nobody likes talking to a wall, they want to be listened when they are talking and be heard. They just look and feel all the more a fool if they keep on talking to you when you're not even paying attention. And plus, they'll feel exasperated in the end so they'll simply quit.

Although it does not seem to work with Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses and Amway fanatics?

BEcause ignoring them means i don't want to entertain the topic, if you talk to them they will keep on questioning because they thought you like wha tthey're doing.
