In a thundorous night at the TD Waterhouse in Boston, the biggest party of the summer was held. Of course, were talking about the 19th annual SummerSlam. Two former WWE champions, John Cena and Batista, will have their opportunity to reclaim what was their at Wrestlemania 21, the WWE title and the World Heavyweight Title respectively. Also, for the first time in WWE history, the most powerful faction in wrestling today goes against the first family of wrestling, as D-Generation X goes against the McMahons (Vince and Shane). All this more were happening tonight and here's how it went down:
Chavo Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio
SummerSlam kick off with a luche libre classic between two former best friends. In honor of the late Eddie Guerrero, Chavo and Rey were trying to outdo each other with classic moves from Eddie. The match was decent with some moves and it wasn't all that bad, considering that Chavo hasn't wrestle in a while and both wrestlers got some heat from fans. Vickie Guerrero even came to stop this match, slapping her husband's nephew outside the ring and causing Rey to lose his balance. The last part was all Chavo needed to pin Rey after connecting with the 5-star frog splash for the victory. Although Chavo won, he wasn't very happy as Vickie ran away in disgust while Chavo was trying to explain.
Backstage, King Booker and Queen Sharmell were talking about walking out of SummerSlam with the title when Edge and Lita came and made a proposition (If Edge lose and Booker wins, the Rated R Superstar makes an apperance to Smackdown to kiss his feet. If Booker lost and Edge wins, the King would have to be Edge's servant the next night on Raw). Both agreed.
ECW Title
Big Show (c) vs. Sabu
The first of three titles was on the line as the ECW title is defended in a WWE pay-per-view, a first in history. Big Show dominated for most of the match but Sabu had some high risk moves in him, dropping the Giant's head onto a table not one but twice (one doing a bulldog thru the ringpost and the other between two ramp the Show brought earlier in the match). After numerous chair shot, Show was busted open but in the end when Sabu was about to put another high risk move, Show caught him in mid-air and chokeslam him thru a table to reclaim the title.
Layla, the third winner of the Diva search contest and the first foreign-born Diva to win (she from England), made her official WWE debut and learn a "hard" lesson from Divas from both Raw and Smackdown, when she was "hosed" off in the shower by Trish and Co. as part of the initiation.
Legend vs. Legand Killer
Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Orton
The third generation superstar was trying to kill the legend that was made 20 years ago in the same event and almost did. Not as good as the HBK-Hulk Hogan match but was decent enough. Fighting through a torn mesculis, the Hulkster was just fighting off Orton when the legend almost died. Orton connected the RKO for a supposed victory but Hogan got his foot up before the count to three and you know the rest. Hogan does the leg drop and the legend continues in Boston
Before the match, Mick Foley had a pep talk with Melina and the Raw diva psych up Foley saying that he couldn't win because she only cares about champion. Foley got intense and that's what Melina wanted out of him.
"I Quit" Match
Mick Foley vs. Ric Flair
This has been 12 years in the making (not counting Vengence) and has live up to expectation. Both were fighting for their pride and Foley was trying to prove Flair that he wasn't a glorified stuntman when they were back in WCW 12 years ago. It had the making of a gruesome match and it wasn't for the faint of heart. Both Flair and Foley got equal amount of punishment, with Mr. Shocko (Mr. Socko w/ barb wire), cardboard with barb wires, "barbie", thumbtacks, and countless other weapons used in the match. At one point when Foley ask, Flair told Foley to "kiss my a**". When Foley drop from the ring thru the concrete floor, Flair just when into a dimension beyond dirty. The paramedic stop the match, but Flair refuse, saying that "This wasn't a laid in my a** match, this was an I Quit match". Even Melina try to stop the match, waving a white towel to quit the match in behalf and referee granted her wishes. Again, Flair refused and wanted to hear those two degrading words from Foley's mouth. As Flair was about to strike Melina with "barbie", Foley utters those two words and both men will never be the same (Flair had a crimson mask of blood all over his head, while Foley was busted through his head and bleeding thru his Cactus Jack shirt).
Backstage, the McMahons were ready to take on DX and ask (say it with me) Arrrrmando Alllejandro Essstrraaaaaaadaaa if they can enlist (say it with me again) Uuuuuuumaaaga to back the McMahons.
World Heavyweight Championship
King Booker (c) w/ Queen Sharmell vs. Batista
The Animal has waited seven months for this opportunity to reclaim the title he never lost in the first place. The match was kind of a dud as it was a slow match with equal share of moves from both wrestlers. Queen Sharmell got involved and was about to be a victim of a double Batista Bomb (King Booker was also in the position) when the ref called for the bell. Batista won but the King left Boston with the title, but not before the Animal gave the King a double-pump Batista Bomb through the ring.
The McMahons wern't the only people who had resources. D-Generation X was talking to a mystery person that had a bad history with the faction backstage and told that the McMahons had the "biggest monster" in Umaga. That person got irate and DX got their backup plan.
D-Generation X vs. The McMahons
As DX did they're usual routine, Triple H said "and just because Vince like..." and the crowd said "c***", and did the suck it. The McMahons came but even before the match started, the first family of wrestling used their unlimted resources and got the Spirit Squad to come out, but was quickly laid out by DX. Then the numbers game started piling up, as Ken Kennedy, William Regal, Finlay, and the Big Show came on behalf of the McMahons and destroy DX (with Show giving the neckbreaker to Michaels and giving Triple H a chokeslam thru the announcer's table). Then you know what happens, the McMahons started to dominating the match, manhandling HBK while Triple H was laid out outside the ring. The McMahons has used every move that insulted any tag teams in history , from the Hart Foundation to the Legion of Doom. Everytime the Game was about to get in, Shane always kick him out. When DX was gaining momentum, the McMahons resource came to their aid as Umaga and Estrada came ringside and clock Triple H and was about to give the thumb to HBK when a former member of DX came to the rescue. Kane, who was with DX as X-Pac tag team partner, attack Umaga and fought him all the way through the ramp. At that point, the McMahons almost signal the victory when Shane was about to go Coast-to-Coast with the Game. Midway through the jump, HBK gave a sweet chin music to the demon seed and just like Wrestlemania, the McMahons were flat on their back as DX won the match (Vince receive the Sweet Chin and the pedigree).
WWE Championship
Edge (c) w/ Lita vs. John Cena
If Edge disqualifed himself, whether it's Lita or not, then Cena would win the title.
This was it. The main event. John Cena hopes to recapture the title in front of his hometown crowd, with John Cena Sr. and his brother in attendence tonight. The match was decent but not as great as their past matches. Both Cena and Edge got some heat from the tough Boston crowd during the match and Edge was only cheered when he connected his move on Cena. Everytime Lita would assist Edge in some way (bringing a chair or the title), the Rated R superstar would say no and almost cost him the title. The ending was conterversial when Cena was about to give the double F-U to Edge and Lita (Lita was F-U out to the ring) when Edge got the brass knuckle he got from Lita and just like the Red Sox, Cena lost. I called it the "Boston Screwjob" but it the "Boston Massacre".
Note: the next pay-per-view is Unforgiven, a Raw PPV. Ironically enough, the PPV is held in Edge's hometurf in Toronto in September. Cena looks to retain that title in Toronto and give Canada something to boo about beside HBK, just like what Edge did in Cena's hometown tonight.
