Yes, when i was a server and a customer said that to me,I would grit my teeth together and try not to glare a kiss my a** look at them because I needed ALL my tips, after all $2.65 isn't even minimum wage and i needed $7.35 more dollars and cents to get too $ 10.00 dollars a hour....So, i tr ed to be the nicest, best-est server a customer would ever have, I would literally bend over backwards for a good tip.............When a group of teenagers came in,I immediately told them that they would not be sharing food and drinks, and paying with change and dollar bills...and i would tell them I expected 20% tip on their total bill.....They would get scare and would leave me my 20% tip.....
Elderly people, are another story, I feel they live in the 20's ,30's, 40's and tip as if they where STILL in the past...leaving me a $1.00 bill tip on $6.25,where is my additional .25 cents......sso..i agree, it is hard to smile, when people are ripping you off...everybody should serve for one whole 8-12 hour shift and see hard it is dealing with some of these cheap individuals,...actually, it should be a law .I guarantee,we would be tipped more and our hourly rate would go up to minimum wage.................keep the faith,i wish you all the luck with these loosers

It really doesn't matter if your a server or not. I can't stand it. If I wanted to smile at you I would, too bad I don't like you and there for I won't smile at you. I mean wouldn't you rather have someone give you a real smile or a fake smile?

I work in the state of Washington and lived in Oregon. Both places pay servers minimum wage. Here in Washington it is $7.63 / hr. I wait tables and beware about wanting min. wage.
What that has done for us is that makes people not want to tip AT ALL. Still that is rare, it is just that they will tell you that we make to much money and that is why they are not tipping. Of course they follow it with "the service was great". Try smiling after that. We also get taxed in accordance with our sales, and the IRS believes that we always make %15. This only makes me want to wait on more IRS employees. So my min. wage check (about 60 hours total) comes to about $50. One of the good things is that we cost so much for the restaurant that as soon as the rush ends they send us home. (most money for the shortest shift)

The other night, someone on here was complaining about men she didn't know coming up and commanding her to smile. People have a lot of nerve. Can't they just leave it at "Have a nice day" or some other harmless drivel?

Hey, me understand how u feel. I'm also working in the service industry. Sometimes it can be a chore to put on a 'mask' and smile at every customer, especially when your having a low period.
Worse if every customer expects of it....
