What is people's opinion on women wanting to keep their maiden name? Assume she has no "external reason" for doing so: she's not famous by her maiden name.

good question.

The reasons I can think of are:

1) His name is Weinersnip (bad)
2) His name is Manson (bad PR)
2) Her name is Powers (cool)
3) She believes she shouldn't be forced to identify herself in society through her husband (progressive?/radical?)
4) Its her name! I don't think I would want to change my name to someone elses I have no history with! (common sense)
-
5) Rebels against tradition because its tradition (narrow minded)
6) Lazy

Before I thought about it logically I would think emotionally.
I would question her level of commitment and the love she has for me - it's unfounded and probably unrelated, but Its a simple course of thought to get on if you panic

Personally, I would want my wife to take my name -
why? well...ah, cause thats nice and its how its done?
Because it really reinforces the commitment the two have between eachother. but it is a lopsided covenant, I understand that - maybe we should switch middle names instead. lol

but if she was adamant against it I would accept it begrudgingly assuming her reason fit somewhere between 1- 4

I can understand a woman wanting to keep her maiden name because she is proud of her family and wants to make a statement about her individuality. However, if she isn't a celebrity, I think it is sensible to take her husband's name or at least to hyphenate her maiden name and her husband's name. Otherwise, it will cause confusion - particularly if they have children. People will wonder if they his from a previous marriage if she doesn't share their name.

I was proud to take my husbands name. It has been great as a family to have the same name. My sister-in-law kept her maiden name and now complains the day care can't ever reach her because they try to use her kids last name when they call her office .

I'm pretty adamant about keeping my maiden name only because it's my name and I'm very proud of it. It means loyal, and there are no boys in my family to carry it on.

i added his last name to mine--but didn't hyphenate....but i use my own maiden name professionally and rarely use my married name--in fact most of my colleagues have no idea what it is or can't spell it if they do!! I happen to like my own name--it was mine for 30 + years--see no need to use his! (i only added it cause it was becomming an argument!)

Sure - why should she have to take his name? I mean, I know it's not the same as women being unable to vote or belonging legally to their husbands or anything, but still... I don't think she should have to lose something she still likes, just because she's a woman.

Who cares about a silly name? It's the level and quality of the commitment that really counts.

I think it just depends on the woman. I am more of a traditionalist so to me there was no question, I wanted to take my husbands name.
