Well, the place the shuttle is launched from and the place where mission control is are two different places. The shuttle is launched down here in Florida from the Kennedy Space Center located over at Cape Canaveral, FL. [I live about an hour away and go there every few months for the cool Visitors' Complex Tour. As soon as the shuttle hits the "lift off" stage in the launch, Mission Control takes over from Launch Control. Launch Control is located at the Johnson Flight Center in Houston, TX--as in "Houston, we have a problem!"
If you download google earth you can somewhat zoom in on both these locations.
