I have been going out with my boyfriend for just over a year and, on the whole, things are going well. But the other day when I was in his house I got a bit of a shock. I saw on his bureau some prescribed medication in his name. It was just sitting there, so I wasn’t prying or going through his stuff. The thing is, I recognised the name of the medication as I have a brother who is schizophrenic and I’ve done some reading on the different types of drugs that are used to treat this disease. The medication is an anti-psychotic used to treat mental illness and extreme anxiety. As you can imagine, I’m pretty shocked as I would never have thought that he would have any problems like that. Should I talk to him about it or should I not pry into it?

The medication was in sight so you might mention that your brother takes medication for psychosis and ask your boyfriend whether his medication gives him side effects.

You need to ask him about it, sensitively. Find out why he is taking it, Some medications are used for different reasons. I have heard of physicians giving meds that are used for schizophrenia for also treating insomnia. I have heard that the same medication for depression can help you stop smoking. So before you jump to conclusions and assume the worst possible scenario, give him the benefit of the doubt and ask him about it. Who knows what you will find out, it may be a blessing.

First, to be honest you should not have gone through his things. Second, evidently he feels he has his illness under control. If you have been with him for a year, and your happy and he hasn't gotten crazy with you, he is taking care of himself.

If you feel uncomfortable you need to tell him, but I guarantee he will be more pissed that you invaded his privacy and you are suppose to be a person he trust.

yes, mention to him that you noticed it and need to talk about it. I am bipolar and take some strong medicine for extream anxiety but I am not schietsophreinic? Maybe You are guessing wrong about the medicine. don't judge his condition until you ask. It may not be as bad as you think. good luck..
