A home pregnancy test *cannot* determine the level of HCG. It can only detect the presence of HCG at or above the set level of the particular test. In other words, if one brand of test has a sensitivity level of 20 mIU, then it will tell you whether there is at least 20 mIU of HCG. If another test has a sensitivity level of 100 mIU, it may be negative when the first one is positive because the level of HCG in the urine hasn't reached the higher level. But in neither case can it tell you more than "yes" or "no".

As for when HCG can be detected, there are a number of other factors. Since sperm can live in the female body up to 5 days (if conditions are right), you can get pregnant from sex almost a week before ovulation. After ovulation, it takes 6-12 days for the fertilized egg to get to the uterus and start implanting, then at least 2 days until there is enough HCG in your system to spill over into the urine. A less sensitive test may not register for another week beyond that. So you can never have a positive pregnancy test less than 8 days after sex, and it can take up to 3 1/2 weeks.

From my experience, I was supposed to have my menses on the 1st day of the month. I did a pregnancy test using a pregnancy test kit which I bought from a drugstore. On the 15th day, the pregnancy test kit showed a very faint positive line. Hope this helps! :-)
