1- Academically, you need evaluation to check where you stand against your peers and to check to see if you are at the sufficient level of development.
2- If your knowledge is lacking and further work/teaching/instruction needs to occur, then evaluation is usually the best way of picking this up.
3. Similarly to the point above, it gives teachers as much opportunity to assess students as it does to assess themselves and see how effective their teaching methods are.
4.Teachers can get a good idea of how student will perform on certain important exams by testing them in advance; this helps prepare students for the 'real thing' as well.
5. A range of assessment tass should always be designed to allow students with a range of abilities to respond in a way most advantageous to them. Very much part of the philosophy of OBE (outcomes-based education) students who are skilled orally would be encouraged to present a speech, as opposed to writing an essay in which they may be less proficient.

There should also be a 6th - to learn. By being evaluated you have a chance to learn from your mistakes, so that you can further improve for next time.
