can i apply for an extention of my visa without leaving the country?

According to the website below It is possible, but only under certain circumstances.

If you want to stay longer, you should check out some of the other visas you may be eligible for, such as working holiday (depends on which country you are from) etc.

I know that a few years ago, the only way to get an extention was to leave the country, and then come back in. Obviously this isnt so easy, because it's not like Australia has any land borders you can drive to, get stamped out of, and then come back into. So it becomes a real pain.

I know that visa laws were changed a little while back, and so perhaps this was changed. Try www.dfat.gov.au

My understanding is that tourist visas can not be extended (unless there are serious mitigating circumstances). You would usually have to leave the country and apply for a more permanent visa through the Australian embassy when you're back home.
