It's a large place, and it's hard to get out of. Also, until very recently, you didn't need a passport to go to either of our two neighboring countries, and for many places in the Caribbean where Americans like to take vacations. Americans don't make a habit of learning foreign languages and are not typically very interested in foreign cultures. When they do go abroad they eat at McDonald's. I also think there's social pressure involved -- it's considered unpatriotic to visit a foreign countryyour own. before you've seen the rest of the U.S. and that would take forever.

There could be many reasons people do not have passports. But that doesn't mean they don't like to travel. In 2005 more than 10 million people were issued passports. That is quite a bit and tells me that quite a few people like to travel.
But please consider that many people cannot afford to travel abroad. That doesn't mean they don't want to. And also consider that the US itself is a vast country with a variety of cultures. You can travel all over the US to see many interesting things and experience different cultures. The southern cultures are very different than those of the midwest.
I just don't think these figures mean that people don't like to travel.

I love traveling. And a lot of Americans like traveling. But first off, our country is different than many other countries. Different states, totally different climates and cities, there's definitely enough to travel within the country, and its important to know your own country. And then, a lot of people who aren't travelling abroad probably dont have the money to blow off. And maybe there are people who don't care, but that's fine.. there are people in all countries like that.

They do most of their traveling in the US or to Canada or Mexico...where you don't need a passport. Most people don't get passports because they are expensive and expire...not practical to get one unless they know they will be traveling overseas. With the rising gas costs, it's tough to spare the extra money to apply and get a passport.
AMERICANS DO TRAVEL!!!!

Where'd you get those numbers?
I like to travel...
Passports are a pain to get, you have to get a passport photo from an independant source, then go to your nearest passport office, wait for a long time, fill out like a million forms, pay money, and then wait like 6 weeks. It sucks.

because Americans are descended from inward looking peasants, this mentality has come forward through time, while America is a lot bigger than a village the mentality is essentially of a close minded , provincial peasantry
