The problem of assigning an interface onto what is us and what is not us need not be limited to what makes us percieve what is external to the body. For example we can close our eyes and still be able to imagine what is us and what is not us as being separate. Meaning that what is self, what is commonly referred to as mind, is separate not only to what is external to body but quite possibly to the body itself. For a purely materialistic interpretation the convergence of singularities is sustaining some soul.

Our eyes are merely a sensory organ, an interface by which we sense. We have several other methods by which we can sense objects about us that are made up of those same atoms.
