It is the amount of time it takes for the shutter to open and close. Less light needs a slower speed. If you are using a flash it should be on 60, if you outside and it is cloudy or overcast it should be on 125, if it is bright and sunny put the speed on 250. Your film speed is important too. 100 for bright and sunny which has the best clarity, 200 for most everything, 400 or higher for either moving stuff like sports or less light with no flash. The higher the speed of film the less clarity.Also, when using really slow speed the camera should be held steady like on a tripod, because it is very easy to move the camera making the picture turn out blurry.

Slower shutter speeds let more light strike the image sensor making an image lighter. Faster shutter speeds let less strike it and make the image darker
