A hardback book has a heavy cover, usually cloth-coated, like the books you see on the library shelves. A paperback book has a much thinner cover and is usually smaller than the average hardback book, like those you see at the checkout stand in the supermarket.

The hardback is the first book of an edition and has a hardback whereas about the paperback gets published and has a paperback.

hardback book has a thicker cover, making it hard. A paperback, the covers are much thinner, and make the book cheaper in price.
