The whole world did. It went from 1 billion then to 6 billion in 2000, that's a huge increase in 150 years.
What happened was the industrial revolution, and many technological advancements in farming, medicine, transportation etc, etc, that have made people's work easier, less death, longer lifespans, etc.

This is a worldwide phenomenon due to the increase in health care, sanitation, and food production.
The population growth of the human race is the biggest problem facing the whole planet not just Asia.

We put a stop to that with something called racism. No one likes anyone taking advantage of the system. Now its mexicans, they will be stopped...Next I think it will be the muslims....5 children per wife. Divorce them and take 50% of the americans money in court....Marry the next american and have 5 children again then divorce....

muslim females cannot marry non-muslim males
to answer the main question, they had nothing else to do, while americans became career oriented and family expansion would be a setback or drain on finances, advancement, etc.
